Strategies of Finding Cheap Hotels in New York

Strategies of Finding Cheap Hotels in New York

by Gee Njuguna

There is an emerging trend that I have noticed in my many months of travel and its that most people like to give up on great bargains even before they start. It looks as if bartering as an art seems to have been forgotten as is the idea of comparison-shopping. Most people do not realize that for every cent that they save while on vacation that they use to buy food, accommodation or transport is money that they can spend on adventure and entertainment.

In the awesome city of New York, there is much that you can do as you go about your business here and a vacation in this city is like an Alice’s adventures in wonderland. This city has so much to offer that its hard to know where to start from. One of the things that i would strongly recommend is to make arrangements to save some cash before landing in New York. You can do this by taking time each evening to reflect and take notes about whom you’ve had a chance to talk to and what they offered you in terms of price & perks for accommodations.

Due to high competition, many hotels in New York are willing to offer perks to their clients in order for them to sleep in their hotels. The managers of these hotels are aggressive in selling the properties they manage since they know the more rooms they fill the more money they will make for the hotels resulting in secure jobs for themselves.

If you are the aggressive type and are diligent in taking notes of the hotels that you have visited and have made arrangements to visit and have a look around, then you will most likely create a deal with one of them that will turn out much better than they the price they were offering you originally.

If you try to secure the deal on a weekend that is popular for travel, it might probably not work out very well so it wouldn’t be a wise idea to look for accommodation in New York on popular holiday dates or an extended weekend for your trip. On the other hand, the rest of the weekends are easy to get unless some popular event is taking place on that particular weekend that will pull in a huge crowd to the local hotel industry.

Earlier in this article i had said that many people usually rather give up good deals even than try to negotiate. Not only are you able to get awesome deals by comparing different hotels in New York city, but can get your hands on other free perks such as meals, spa packages, tickets to shows and gift certificates at the hotel gift store. Most managers will try to do anything to get business from you. The reason is that they are willing to risk doing business with you knowing that they will make more money from add-ons and other purchases that you might make.

Please remember to be a generous tipper as some New York hotel managers can get angry and confuse being frugal or cheap. Being cheap is one thing and being frugal another. If you treat the staff badly they will remember you long after you’re gone! But lets not go there as that is another long story all together. The trick is being polite and nice when dealing with hotel managers over the telephone and going with your best deal.

Finally, remember that getting the cheapest room is not necessarily getting the best deal. For example, if you are getting one or two meals per day while at the hotel and yet on the other hand are only paying five or ten dollars more a day, then its logical that you are getting a very fair bargain particularly if one of the meals is dinner.
